My November 2023 Photo of the Month is WND207, taken during a morning of heavy surf at San Diego/La Jolla’s Windansea Beach.

Not much photography happened in November, and I suppose that is by choice. I will write more about this when I write a future blog post on my 2024 goals, but I find myself wanting to consciously cut back on this endeavor. Too much to explain in this short blog post, but I did make it out of the house for a few visits to some of my favorite places.
I actually didn’t know Windansea Beach was under a high surf warning. One Saturday morning, I decided to make a visit, and I was certainly surprised by what I saw. The waves crashing on the sea stacks were easily 2-3 times my height. A couple of the really big ones came close enough that I had to grab my tripod and run. That is always fun, as long as my gear doesn’t get wet.
San Diego has had some warm weather with some Santa Ana conditions. Even coming in the morning, I found that the normal marine layer was quickly dissipating. The light was pretty powerful, and I found some monochrome imagery did this image justice.
Windansea Beach continues to capture my imagination, even after living in San Diego for 26 years now. Up and down the beach, I find different angles, stacks, and areas to photograph that I hadn’t conceived before. Luckily with my GPS module, I have a good sense of where I have good coverage of the beach, and where I need to find new spots.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy the image.

Spectacular surf and interesting patterns in the sand.
