Juniper and Monolith has long been a popular location in Joshua Tree National Park. Located in the Jumbo Rocks area, many photograph it throughout the day. Because I camp in Joshua Tree every Christmas, I often have a chance to photograph it when the light is right.
The Beauty Of Juniper and Monolith
I think the earliest photograph of this spot was from a local artist named Ellie Tyler. My friend Jeremy was cruising through the park and spotted it. It’s not a particularly tough location.
I have photographed it in many conditions and moods, but camping in the area gave easy access and a chance to be up before dawn if any magic happened.
On this particular Christmas morning, twilight was spectacular with incredible reds, blues, and purples. The Moon was hiding behind the clouds, and the glow added another great element. I have always liked to capture a lot of sky from this spot.
Many people were still asleep, rising late, and missing all of the drama. That’s fine if they just want to camp. Relax and enjoy the day! But I saw several, including a campsite next to me, that were decked out with cameras and tripods. They were up when the sun was about 15% high in the sky. Way too late, my friends.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy the image.
