My May 2023 Photo of the Month is MD18, taken from the Solomons Island Boardwalk, Maryland, at Sunset.
MD18 Background
I was recently out of town for a few weeks. I didn’t make as many great images as I hoped, but in going through the work I brought home, I decided that my one sunset in Solomons Island, Maryland, was my best.
Southern Maryland is full of large rivers and many peninsulas that all empty into the Chesapeake Bay. In this case, it is the Patuxent River that the Solomons Island Boardwalk follows. Finding the right area to set up can be somewhat challenging because the area is so flat. It became apparently that the many large bridges in and around the State were the best way to frame an image. The best light, as usual, was after the sun had gone down, and this was a full 15 minutes after sunset. It is always good to stay and watch that final burn before dusk wins the day.
This really was my only night of dramatic light, and while cooler, milder, and drier, weather prevailed, I could have used more nights like these. Maryland was a nice State to see, since my only previous experience had been landing at BWI and taking a rental car West. There is a lot out there to see, and I just barely scratched the surface of all the images that can be made in these inlets. I hope to return someday and take some time to make more images like this one.
As always, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the image.
