May 2017 Photo Of The Month: Sandstone Butte

My May 2017 Photo Of The Month is Sandstone Butte, a black-and-white image made in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

I had a very active month.  Some of the places I photographed included Anza Borrego, Fort Rosecrans (and Miramar and Riverside National Cemeteries), Joshua Tree, and the Laguna Mountains.

I came away with a number of winners, everything from arches to slot canyons and more.  In reviewing my May images, Sandstone Butte was the image I kept coming back to.  A late Spring storm brought unusually cool temperatures to the desert, and I just couldn’t get enough of the wind caves on this butte with a storm overhead.

This butte is located just south of the Calcite Mine Area.  It is a great spot to visit, although I would heartily recommend you postpone that hike for cooler weather.

Sometimes, these best images are unexpected.  I didn’t realize the temperatures were dropping until Thursday of that week (Thank you to Peter Tellone for mentioning on Twitter) and I immediately made plans to visit the area with good friend Alex Kunz.  We later had dinner in Borrego Springs with Peter and recounted a good day of hiking and photography.

Now we are on to June, and a weekend is almost upon us.  I look forward to writing this post next month.  Thank you very much for reading.
