My October Photo of the Month is TTR115, taken in Solana Beach at an area often called Tabletop Reef.

This being “Conference Season” in some of my other pursuits, I had a very light month of photography. One moment I was able to get out was a morning visit to Cardiff State Beach, in an area we know as Tabletop Reef. I was there with friend Alex, and I believe all of my prior visits to this location have been with him. As it turned out, this would not be me at my photographic best, as I managed to forget my tripod at home. This is usually a fatal error when photographing the coast. But I worked with what I could!
Despite this mistake, one can improvise. This turned out to be one of what some friends would call a “classic” shot I like to take: wide, vertical, with a lot of negative space. The moon was setting, but still high in the Western sky, and the morning fog/marine layer was just starting to burn off. This created an interesting striation of heavy clouds in the distance, with others lightly burning off, and the dark hues of a blue sky above.
I also love beach patterns, and while they are a little obscured by my ever-present watermark, they make the beach quite interesting at times. I have thousands of “dark beach streak” photos to keep my Lightroom subscription going for decades.
Now that conference season is over, perhaps I’ll have more chances to get out and make images. However, with the change to Standard Time (why oh why do we still do this?), the chance to get out after work to make photographs will be coming to a close for 4 – 5 months.
As always, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the images.
