My July Photo of the Month is CO578,taken during an early evening of Fishers Peak during a clearing monsoon storm.
CO578 Background
There wasn’t a lot of photographic activity in July, as San Diego experienced mild but dry weather. That being said, one trip was made to visit family, and that area of Southern Colorado was experiencing plenty of weather.
Fishers Peak in Southern Colorado is quite distinct, due to its tilted but flat shape. There is also no point higher than it anywhere East in North America. The State of Colorado was lucky enough to acquire the property and create Fishers Peak State Park. The park property is very large, but much of it is off limits as more park infrastructure is put in.
As the North America monsoon builds during the Summer, Fishers Peak is one of the first high points it hits, and it often has pretty dramatic weather.
This image was taken in the early evening, after some rainstorms. The juniper forest always smells very nice when this happens. This photograph was actually made in a church parking lot, with a good direct view of the peak. I drove around all week trying to find good unobstructed views of the mountain.
It would be nice to climb this mountain someday. From what I have gathered, besides the hiking involved, you would also need to rock climb the final terraces to the top. I’ve also read it is technically possible to reach the summit from the New Mexico side, but that is quite a hike in from Sugarite Canyon State Park.
As always, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the image.
