My April 2024 Photo of the Month is SD523, taken on a nice morning in La Jolla’s Scripps Coastal Preserve.
SD523 Background
I didn’t photograph a lot in April, and some of that was the previous Pac-Man Solar Eclipse in San Diego. Friend and colleague Alexander S. Kunz suggested a morning at Scripps Coastal Preserve, which runs the cliffs of La Jolla North of La Jolla Shores.
It turned out we arrived for a very low tide. Normally, I don’t enjoy walking over all the small rocks at this location, but with the ocean drawn so far out, there was plenty of beach to access.
I have always enjoyed the view North from this location, with the striking cliffs. While the marine layer started burning off early, we had some clouds retreat back over the the coast, providing a nice backdrop to this image.
California’s Coast is about to hit marine layer season, giving photographers plenty of great mornings to enjoy overcast weather that transitions to partly cloudy before noon. I hear lame people declare it “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” but to be honest, this is one of my favorite seasons of the year. Extroverts getting depressed with this weather keeps the mornings hassle-free, thank you very much.
I am headed to the Bay Area for the early part of May, and I am certain my next Photo of the Month will be from up there. It will be fun to explore some areas that are fairly new to me. I am looking forward to it.
As always, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the image

I like the upward flow, from the rocky beach, to the cliffs, to the bright sky.
