1987 Topps Base Needs

There is a feeling of nostalgia I have for the 1987 Topps set. As a 10 year old, this was my first exposure to collecting baseball cards, and the first packs I purchased. I seem to remember them being 45 cents per pack, which we often purchased at the Texaco on the way home from our middle school. So, it brings back many memories to pour over these cards.

All that being said, here is a dose of reality. My word, these cards suck.

Two years before Upper Deck released their first set and cleaned their clock, Topps was clearly resting on their laurels. While many remember the wood-grained panels fondly, in modern times I think the design is mediocre. The finish on these cards are closer to sandpaper than gloss. And let’s not forget the classic Topps gum stains, which instantly ruined one card in your packs.

And I swear I thought B.J. Surhoff was a future superstar, if only because his baseball card said so.

The set itself offers little. Just 792 cards, in a single series. There are “subsets,” but wholly contained in the main set. While 87 Topps avoids the ridiculous amount of subsets and parallels in future cards, this one is just uninteresting to a fault.

Because of the role these cards have had in my collecting hobby, I do feel the urge to finish the set anyway. And because this set is so mediocre, and so overproduced, they are a cinch to collect and finish. Heck, I think a lot of people would just give me the cards for free just to take them off their hands.

On that note, I look forward to finishing all 792, perhaps without any gum stains.
