October Ribbonwood
Photographed: 2017
Location: Laguna Mountains, California
This time of year, the Ribbonwood Tree, Adenostoma sparsifolium, has a beautiful gold color as its flowers wilt. This is the sort of strange but very cool Fall color season you can see in chaparral country. You don't need to chase Aspens and Cottonwoods if you look for others near where you live.

Old In-Ko-Pah Road
Photographed: 2017
Location: In-Ko-Pah Park, California
This roadway likely pre-dates US Route 80 and may have originally been part of the Bankhead Highway. Old Highway 80 is routed next to this road which basically runs down a drainage bottom. This section collapsed at an old creek bridge.
The replacement bridge along Old Highway 80 was built in 1932. Like the Jacumba Railway bridge that was built in 1931, this old section of road appears to have become obsolete through the rainy seasons.

1931 Bridge
Photographed: 2013
Location: Jacumba Hot Springs, California
This beautiful bridge was built in 1931 over the original Bankhead Highway bridge that was destroyed. Look in the background, and you will see telephone lines going through the original road that pre-dated US Route 80. The bridge is over the Arizona Eastern San Diego railway.

Old Road Split
Photographed: 2013
Location: Mountain Springs, California
The original route of Old Highway 80 through In-Ko-Pah Gorge, concrete still intact and looking spectacular. Interstate 8 crosses this road and the East-bound and West-bound lanes continue on either side of the road through separate canyons.

At the cliff where the original US Route 80 roadcut ends with the Eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 heading down Myer Creek Canyon.

C-Block Marker
Photographed: 2017
Location: Jacumba Hot Springs, California
A rare C-Block marker still intact along Old Highway 80. The actual marker is located along an older portion of the road that was eventually bypassed, perhaps in 1931.

Myer Creek Ruins
Photographed: 2016
Location: Myer Creek, Imperial County, California
Part of the original road-cut from Old Highway 80 through Myer Creek. When the road was active, it supported both Eastbound and Westbound traffic. Interstate only routes Eastbound traffic through Myer Creek (Westbound traffic was moved to a new route through Devils Canyon). The ruins are surreal, and were likely damaged after Hurricane Kathleen devastated the area.

Bankhead Springs Hotel
Photographed: 2016
Location: Bankhead Springs, California
Bankhead Springs, named for the historic Bankhead Highway, was essentially a suburb of Jacumba Hot Springs, at the Southernmost stretch of Old Highway 80 in California. The most notable landmark was the Bankhead Springs Hotel, shown here in modern times as a private residence. It would be lovely to someday be able to do a tour of the old hotel and take some interior photographs.

Frosty Burger
Photographed: 2013
Location: Pine Valley, California
Frosty Burger has only been around since 1980, so it post-dates the installation of Interstate 8. But it is still a great landmark along Old Highway 80, and they make a mighty tasty chocolate shake as well.

Old Pine Valley Creek Bridge
Photographed: 2017
Location: Pine Valley, California
This is the original U.S. Route 80 bridge over Pine Valley Creek. It was eventually bypassed and the modern Old Highway 80 bridge was recently rebuilt. This bridge appears to be on private property now and has limited access to both sides. It would be nice to get permission from the property owner to photograph it more extensively someday.

16 San Elijo
Title: 16 San Elijo
Photographed: 2016
Location: San Elijo State Beach, California
A morning of strange weather and rare cloud formations was a perfect backdrop of this image of one of the many lifeguard towers at San Elijo. It is rare when I go to the beach and walk away with an image that doesn't have any water, coastline, or visible horizon.
The clouds were some of the coolest and strangest I have ever seen in Southern California. While I am not a weather specialist, and thus don't know the name of these types of clouds, I was able to immediately recognize this was not something you see every day.
I want to thank my good friend Lee Sie who I was shooting with when we spotted these formations.

Contemplating Infinity
Contemplating Infinity
Photographed: 2016
Location: Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, San Diego, California
This image was taken on a hot, muggy, September evening at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. I had taken a number of short bursts, and the images were nice. I wanted to try something more contemplative, so I used my 9-stop neutral density filter that allowed me to capture this image over the course of one minute.
Doing so smoothed out the waves, and the reflections looked like mere ghosts or suggestions of the moving clouds above.
Sunset Cliffs was especially busy for a weekday evening, but with the hot weather and incredible clouds during the week, many people were out. Just to my right, about 20 teenagers stood at the edge, contemplating diving into the ocean below (not recommended).
I hope everybody enjoys this image.

Windansea Pool
Photographed: 2016
Location: Windansea Beach, San Diego, California
This was taken on a quick trip to Windansea with my friend Alex Kunz. The beach was super busy, it was warm and hazy, but some nice monsoonal moisture came in near sunset. This was one of the many small pools that could be found after low tide.

San Diego Bay Twilight

June 18 Sunset
June 18 Sunset is an image made by T.M. Schultze in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in San Diego, California. 2 days before the Summer solstice, a heat wave in the Southwest brought high temperatures that kept the onshore flow marine layer at bay. With moisture in the air, this was perfect for high clouds setting up in the evening.
With the moon nearly full, the tide was very high, with a good portion of Ross Rock was underwater. The surf wasn't huge, but with the high tide offered some beautiful wave crashes.

Morning on Bernardo Mountain
Photographed: 2016
Location: San Dieguito River Park, San Diego, California
I got up early to hike up Bernardo Mountain, the lowest elevation of the Sierra Club's San Diego County 100 Peaks. The marine layer was quickly retreating as I enjoyed a beautiful view South towards Rancho Bernardo, and the Eastern stretch of Lake Hodges.

Ocean to Ocean Bridge, Twilight
Photographed: 2016
Location: Yuma, Arizona
This bridge linked vehicular traffic between California and Arizona. When it opened, it was the only vehicular crossing of the Colorado River for 1,200 miles. If you were travelling from the East Coast to the West Coast, you had to veer South as much as 1,500 miles out of your way to use this bridge.
This image was taken before sunrise from Yuma's Gateway Park. There are now a total of 4 bridges that would be considered part of the Gateway: The original Ocean to Ocean bridge, a matching span for railroad traffic, the 4th Avenue bridge into Yuma that was Old Highway 80, and the final span of Interstate 8 over the Colorado River.

Good Neighbors
Photographed: 2013
This portion of the border fence between the United States and Mexico exists near Campo, California at the Southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail.
This fence divides people, cultures, hopes, and dreams. Dreams are shared by all cultures though, and with our historical and cultural influence we share with our Southern neighbors, it is a wonder that this walls needs to exist at all.
Someday, this border can be the point to shake hands with friends, not unnecessarily divide us.

The Boulevard

US Highway 80 ran from San Diego to Georgia before it was gradually replaced. In California, most of Highway 80 was replaced by Interstate 80. This night image was taken along the El Cajon Boulevard section of Old Highway 80.

Los Terrinitos Cutoff
Photographed: 2013
Location: Descanso, California
Before Old Highway 80 was built to veer north at a larger bridge over the Sweetwater River, this was the original path that probably included the Bankhead Highway. The current asphalt veers to the right to meet Wildwood Glen Lane, the long-time route of US Highway 80. You can still seen the concrete seams over the original road. It's now a driveway through private property, although as you can see, the telephone lines still continue in the original path.

Hidden Cave
Title: Hidden Cave
Photographed: 2011
Location: Joshua Tree National Park, California
This hidden location hosts some of the best and most elaborate pictographs in all of Joshua Tree National Park. This is a protected location. Park Service Rangers will likely not acknowledge it's existence if you ask. They almost certainly will not tell you where to find it.
Rock art preservation vs. public knowledge is a serious debate these days. Joshua Tree National Park hosts a wide variety of petroglyphs, pictographs, and other rock art throughout the park. Some locations have sustained significant damage. The increased popularity of Joshua Tree has made this an even bigger issue.
I will not reveal this location to anybody who asks under any circumstances.
