Transitions shows a beautiful clearing storm in the Laguna Mountains in East San Diego County. A small canyon leads to the transition zone between chaparral and the desert West, as Granite Mountain looms in the distance.
This photograph was selected as my April 2018 Photo of the Month.

Downingia Concolor
Title: Downingia Concolor
Photographed: 2017
Location: Lake Cuyamaca
My friend Alex Kunz slammed his brakes on Sunrise Highway and immediately backed up. As it turned out, he found an interesting field of purple flowers lying in a small creek drainage leading into Lake Cuyamaca.
As it turns out, this flower (Downingia Concolor) is quite rare, as it is an annual that apparently only grows in wet rain seasons. Because the 2016 - 2017 rain season was so good for us, rare wildflowers such as these have been showing up.
Alex has reported in his blog post that this particular subspecies is endemic only to the Lake Cuyamaca area so it is a very rare flower indeed.
Looking closely, you could see that there were several modest vernal pools for these seeds to germinate it. Indeed, there were small frogs in the pools as well.
