East Wetlands Sunrise
Location: East Wetlands, Colorado River, Yuma, Arizona
I was visiting my Grandmother when she suggested we get up at 4 AM to visit the East Wetlands just inside the Yuma Gateway along the Colorado River. The reason for the early wake-up was to avoid the stifling Summer heat, which was even worse with monsoonal moisture and its associated humidity.
Monsoonal weather makes for great light though, and the sunrise was truly amazing. It was incredible to be able to experience this wondrous light with my Grandmother, who can still walk and hike. This was a truly memorable morning for both of us.
Must of the East Wetlands was decimated by agricultural runoff that caused much of the soil to be salinated and inhospitable to most of the native vegetation. A huge project to desalinate the soil and plant vegetation has resulted in a beautiful landscape that supports the Colorado River and its associated flora and fauna.

This photo was taken during a freak, rare, summer storm in San Diego County. This photograph was indeed made on my birthday. That day, I attended the wedding of two very good friends. I am not the dancing type, so I left and made my way to the coast as quickly as possible. It was incredible to watch the sky light up as the sun retreated. These moments are inspirational.

A desert monsoon storm at sunset by Joshua Tree National Park's Cholla Cactus Garden. Summer afternoons often bring these desert monsoon storms that bring huge clouds, dramatic light, and beautiful scenes. This storm hung over the Pinto Basin, a location well-known for dangerous flash flooding. The location at the Cholla Cactus Garden is several miles upstream from the basin.

This was literally one of the greatest sunsets of my life. Ross Rock is one of my favorite locations to photograph in San Diego, and I distinctly remember the clouds setting up perfectly, the light beginning to reflect, and the anticipation growing for what was truly an unforgettable experience.
